Is paragliding dangerous?

However, like any sport, there are risks to consider and precautions to take to ensure your safety and that of others. Paragliding itself is not dangerous, but it greatly depends on the pilot’s behavior and environmental conditions. Where do takeoff and landing occur during a paragliding activity?

During a paragliding experience with Cloud Hunters, takeoff can occur from any field located on a mountain or hill, excluding airport areas or areas of aeronautical interest. Generally, the space required for takeoff is minimal, with experienced pilots capable of taking off from areas as small as 20×20 meters. As for landing, there are no particular formalities: a field approximately 50×50 meters is sufficient. It is important to note that both takeoff and landing are very gentle, without jumps, bumps, or feelings of emptiness. To take off, you simply run a short distance, and after a few meters, you are gently lifted into flight; similarly, the return to the ground is just as smooth and without abrupt bumps.

What is the difference between paragliding and parachuting?

Paragliding and parachuting are two completely different activities with distinct purposes and functionalities. Although they may seem similar, there are important differences to consider. Paragliding is designed for free and controlled flight, while parachuting is primarily used for jumping from airplanes or great heights. In paragliding, the pilot takes off from a slope by deploying the wing and starting a run without jumping into the void, whereas in parachuting, the jump occurs from an airplane and the canopy opens only during free fall. Additionally, paragliding features a larger wing and a significantly higher glide ratio (efficiency) compared to parachuting, as it is designed to prolong the flight and soar as long as possible. In summary, while a parachute is mainly used to bring the pilot back to the ground after free fall, a paraglider is designed for controlled and prolonged flight.

How does a paraglider “stay up”?

Although a paraglider lacks an engine, it flies by utilizing aerodynamic principles. Just like a glider, its wing shape creates a pressure difference between the upper surface (extrados) and the lower surface (intrados). This pressure difference generates an upward force called lift, which counteracts the force of gravity and allows the paraglider to stay in the air. To generate lift, the paraglider must move forward. For this reason, takeoff always occurs from a high point, such as a mountain, which allows the aircraft to gain the necessary speed. In the absence of mountainous terrain, as in Northern Europe, a tow by an airplane or a winch is used to give the paraglider the initial speed. But how does a paraglider climb without an engine? The key is ascending air. Imagine blowing over a sheet of paper: the sheet rises. The same principle applies to the paraglider. When the paraglider encounters an updraft that rises faster than the aircraft descends, it is literally lifted upwards. These updrafts, called thermals, form due to the heating of the ground by the sun. Experienced paraglider pilots learn to recognize and utilize thermals to gain altitude and prolong their flight.
